6 Common Patio Problems to Look For

Table of Contents

Patios are great outdoor spaces to relax, unwind, and socialize. No matter if yours is built with bricks, concrete, flagstones, or pavers, there are a few common problems that all patios might encounter. Here are six common patio problems to look out for and how to solve them.

1. Unwanted Weeds

Nobody likes weed growing through the cracks of their patio. They’re unsightly and disrupt your patio’s aesthetic. That’s why, when you first see weeds sprouting through your patio, it’s important that you take care of them immediately so they don’t return. Start by manually removing the weeds followed by an application of herbicide.

2. Visible Dirt and Mold

Your patio is located outdoors, and it should come as no surprise that dirt and mold are likely to appear. When you see dirt and mold on your patio, use a power washer to remove it. Afterward, mix muriatic acid with water and use a sponge to scrub the surface. Finally, use the power washer again for a final rinse

3. Fading

Over time, you might notice your patio color is fading. You can protect your patio from fading by cleaning it regularly and shielding it from the sun. If your patio has significant discoloration, have it repaired by a Maryland patio contractor.

4. Cracks

Whether it’s a small chip or a long crack, the problem must be addressed immediately. Small cracks can turn into bigger problems if left unresolved. Luckily, cracks are relatively easy to repair. Depending on your patio material, you can either remove that part of the patio and replace it, or you can use a caulking gun, putty knife, and polymer-based filler to cover and smooth each crack.

5. Sinking

Every patio has the potential to sink, but the risk is especially prevalent if you used pavers. Sinking pavers not only make your patio look bad, but they cause drainage problems that result in even more damage. You can repair sunken pavers by wiggling them out, pouring sand underneath them that they are level, and putting the paver back in its spot.

6. Splintering, Warping, and Other Damage

Be on the lookout for any signs of damage. Some of those signs include warping, splintering, and missing nails. Sometimes you can fix these problems by yourself, but other times, like when there’s extensive damage, you’ll need the help of a patio expert.
